How Has Copyright Cases Evolved in The Music Industry Over The Years?

About My Project
Music is something that most people enjoy listening to and some people might find that there are often many similarities between the popular songs that they love to listen to. This is because there are only so many different chord progressions that exist. Even though this is well known fact, these similarities often lead to discourse between artists because of the term known as copyright. Copyright is when an artist has the right to authorize whether or not someone else can copy their music or other art forms. Violating copyright is illegal and artists can face severe consequences if they do violate it. A lot of times, copyright violations go to court. Since there have been a lot of cases over the years that have been in the music industry there are a lot of cases that can be analyzed. For my research project I am going to be analyzing those court cases based on different components and try to find patterns in them. Some of those components include the ruling of the case, and different demographics of the defendant and defendee such as: race, gender, age, genre of music.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the correlation between demographic factors and case outcomes, particularly focusing on ethnicity, gender, and age in copyright infringement cases. Despite initial expectations, the analysis failed to provide sufficient evidence to support the hypothesis. While no significant correlation was found between demographics and case resolutions, notable patterns emerged. Defendants were consistently more likely to prevail, and American (white) and American (black) were the most prevalent ethnicities among parties involved. Additionally, a gender imbalance was evident, with a higher number of males implicated in copyright infringement cases compared to females. Nonetheless, the gender distribution among plaintiffs and defendants remained relatively balanced. Although the original hypothesis was not upheld, this study offers valuable insights into demographic trends in copyright infringement cases over time.
